Mental Health Awareness Month: Tips & Resources for Your Wellness Journey

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — a time to break the stigma, spark conversations, and prioritize the wellbeing of our minds and hearts.

At Wanderlust Therapy, LLC, we believe that mental wellness is just as important as physical health and is deeply intertwined with physical and spiritual health, and that healing looks different for everyone. Whether you’re navigating stress, trauma, burnout, or simply trying to feel more balanced, you are not alone.

I’ve personally walked through seasons marked by trauma, chronic anxiety, and bouts of depression. Through intentional inner work—healing old wounds, unlearning unhealthy coping patterns, developing healthy boundaries, and practicing assertive communication—I’ve experienced profound transformation. Daily personal development, a strong relationship with God, and the courage to sit with discomfort have all been essential parts of my journey. Today, I no longer experience depressive episodes, my anxiety has decreased significantly, and I’ve embraced post-traumatic growth as the narrative for my life. Healing is never easy—but it’s absolutely worth it.

Here are a few supportive tips and resources to help you care for your mental health this month and beyond:

  1. Check in with yourself daily
Try starting your morning with a few deep breaths and a simple question: 'How am I really feeling today?' Self-awareness is the first step toward self-compassion.
  2. Prioritize rest and boundaries
It’s okay to say no. It’s okay to rest. Healthy boundaries protect your peace and create space for healing and clarity.
  3. Move your body in ways that feel good
Gentle stretching, beach walks, yoga, or even dancing in your kitchen — movement can help release tension and boost your mood.
  4. Reach out and connect
Mental health struggles can feel isolating, but support is always available. Talk to a friend, therapist, or support group. Connection heals.
  5. Feed your mind intentionally
Choose content that uplifts and inspires you. Listen to mental health podcasts, read empowering books, and follow social media accounts that promote emotional wellness.
  6. Practice gratitude
Each evening, write down three things you’re thankful for. Gratitude helps rewire our brains to notice joy — even in small moments.
  7. Seek professional support
Therapy isn’t just for crisis — it’s for growth, exploration, and becoming your best self. If you’ve been considering it, now is a beautiful time to start.
  8. Have something to look forward to
Having an event, a trip, a concert, a night out with girlfriends planned and scheduled allows us to have something we are looking forward to and helps us see light when things may be difficult.
